Deepfake Scandal Rocks Guwahati School as Students Face Cyber Crime Probe Over AI-Generated Obscene Images
A cybercrime case in Guwahati’s St Francis de Sales School involves students accused of using AI to create and circulate deepfake images of teachers and students. The Assam Cyber Crime Branch is investigating device data, chats, and possible financial links. The school has suspended students and initiated internal probes amid rising concerns over AI misuse and online safety.
According to reports, certain students are accused of using artificial intelligence tools to generate digitally manipulated and objectionable images without the knowledge or consent of the individuals whose photographs were used. These fabricated images were subsequently circulated on social media platforms and messaging services, including Telegram, where they rapidly spread among users.
The Assam Police Cyber Crime Branch has taken up the investigation to determine the origin of the images, the method used for their creation, and whether there was any financial exchange involved in their distribution. Authorities are also examining mobile phones, digital devices, and online chat records as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The school administration was informed of the incident on June 12. Following the disclosure, the matter was immediately referred to internal bodies, including the Child Abuse Monitoring Committee (CAMC), which initiated a preliminary internal investigation. The administration has also engaged in discussions with the parents of the students involved.
Pending the completion of the inquiry, the students linked to the incident have been temporarily suspended. The school has stated that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with institutional regulations and applicable laws once the investigation concludes.
The administration has strongly condemned cyberbullying, online harassment, misuse of digital platforms, and any activity that compromises the safety, dignity, or privacy of students and staff members. Officials emphasized that such conduct is entirely unacceptable within the academic environment.
The incident has intensified concerns regarding the misuse of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. Experts and authorities note that such misuse can severely damage an individual’s reputation, mental well-being, and private life, particularly when minors are involved. The case highlights the urgent need for stronger cyber awareness, responsible digital behavior, and enhanced safeguards to protect children in an increasingly technology-driven environment.
